Contacting a counsellor when you find yourself struggling emotionally is a very positive step - but one that can be quite daunting, especially if you are not really sure what to expect.
There are many different approaches to counselling which come under the umbrella term of 'talking therapies', some of which you may already have heard of , for example Psychoanalysis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfullness, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) - to name just a few.
As a fully qualified Integrative Counsellor I combine a number of different psychotherapeutic methods and tailor therapy to suit your individual needs. My approach is open and non-judgmental, encouraging and also challenging when appropriate. It is important that you feel comfortable and able to explore your emotions freely. Sessions are mainly led by you - you decide what you want to explore and we work together at your pace.
Depending on the issues you want to address, therapy may be short-term, mainly solution-focused where we look at developing strategies and providing the tools you need to help you handle your emotions effectively. Or it can be more in-depth, longer-term therapy where we explore the past to identify the root causes of your current emotional issues. This will help you to make sense of how you are feeling and why you may adopt certain behaviours. It will give you insight into how you interpret the world and other people and how this affects your thoughts and emotions. With this greater self-knowledge we continue our work together developing the solutions needed to achieve the outcome you desire.
